Blog: Ofsted Single Headline Grades Removed - What It Means for Parents and Schools
As of 2nd September 2024 with immediate effect, schools in England will no longer receive Ofsted single headline grades, also known as single word judgements. This change marks the first step towards implementing a more comprehensive accountability system, which will introduce School Report Cards starting from September 2025. These report cards aim to provide parents with a complete picture of how schools are performing.
Why the Change?
Research conducted by Ofsted revealed that single word judgements aren't effective for either parents or schools. In fact, fewer than 40% of parents and only 29% of teachers support the use of one-word judgements. The goal is to offer parents access to a more comprehensive understanding of school performance, beyond just a single word.
Moreover, the introduction of report cards is an important step towards achieving higher standards in schools, as they will hold schools accountable across a broader range of measures.
Comparing Schools in the Meantime
Schools that currently have an existing grade will retain it until their next inspection. Those inspected this year will receive ratings in the four existing subcategories: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership & management.
Parents can compare schools by examining how they perform in each of these areas, as Ofsted inspection reports already include these subcategories. We will be making changes to the site shortly in order to make it easier to compare older Ofsted reports with new ones.
Interventions for Poorly Performing Schools
The government will continue to intervene in poorly performing schools to ensure high standards for children. Schools classified as 'inadequate' will remain subject to structural changes in their leadership and management.
For schools that 'require improvement', the intervention process is being modified. New regional improvement teams will be introduced to provide targeted support, addressing areas where schools need to improve. In some cases, plans may involve changing the school's leadership and management by converting it to an academy or transferring it to a different academy trust.
Looking Ahead: School Report Cards
School Report Cards will provide parents with a more comprehensive picture of school performance. The content of these report cards will be developed over the coming months in collaboration with Ofsted, parents, and the education sector to ensure clarity and transparency.
At School Ratings, we will keep you informed about these changes and provide updates on the development of School Report Cards. Our aim is to help parents make informed decisions about their children's education and to support schools in their continuous improvement efforts.
