This independent special school, which caters for pupils with EHC plans mainly for social, emotional and mental health needs, is not meeting several independent school standards consistently. Safeguarding is not effective, particularly around health and safety and fire safety on the school site, and leadership and governance require urgent improvement. Many pupils arrive after exclusion or long periods outside formal education, which adds to the school’s challenge. Pupils benefit from warm, caring relationships with staff, a trusted adult, and positive responses to bullying. Some subjects, notably English and reading, are better developed, older pupils gain GCSEs and accredited vocational qualifications, and enrichment activities broaden experiences. Attendance has improved since the last inspection and some individual pupils are better supported. However, achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and personal development all need attention. Curriculum and teaching are inconsistent, gaps in mathematics and other subjects persist, attendance monitoring is weak, behaviour expectations vary, the school has no accessibility plan, and PSHE and careers are underdeveloped. The proprietor’s quality checks have not identified or fixed compliance failures.
