Hatfeild Primary School is a nurturing, welcoming and happy school where pupils feel safe and enjoy learning. Since its previous inspection, the school has embedded its ‘ready, respectful, safe’ vision and set higher expectations for all pupils, including the most vulnerable and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Behaviour is typically calm and courteous, attendance is strong, and pupils benefit from a wide range of enrichment activities and clubs. The curriculum has improved markedly, particularly in mathematics and science, and early reading is a clear strength. Children get a secure start in the early years, with a strong focus on language and communication. The school’s additionally resourced provision for pupils with autism is meeting pupils’ needs very well, with expert staff and effective work with external professionals. A new leadership team, within the Cherrywood Federation, has taken swift and effective action, and staff feel well supported. There are still areas to improve. In a few foundation subjects, the essential knowledge pupils need is not clearly identified, so some activities and checks on learning do not help pupils remember key content over time. In mainstream classes, oversight of SEND is sometimes not focused enough, meaning some pupils with less complex needs do not always get learning that is well adapted to help them succeed.
