Mortimer House School is an independent special school for pupils aged 11 to 18 with social, emotional and mental health needs. All pupils have an education, health and care plan, and many arrive with highly disrupted prior education and long periods out of school. Inspectors found the school performing very well overall: safeguarding standards are met, all independent school standards are met, and the school's personal development and wellbeing provision is a standout feature that transforms pupils' experiences and prepares them well for independent living. Across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance, the school reaches a strong standard. Leaders rapidly close learning gaps and provide effective support in reading, literacy and numeracy. Pupils gain suitable qualifications and progress to ambitious destinations, including colleges and universities. Attendance improves because barriers are identified quickly and relationships with families are strong. Pupils behave well, understand that bullying is not tolerated, and are supported to manage their own behaviour and emotions. Inclusion work is meticulous, using education, health and care plans and external expert advice to create and review individual learning plans. Leadership benefits from a robust proprietor support network, and parents and staff speak highly of the school. The main area for continued development is curriculum implementation. Leaders should keep refining this through regular quality assurance so that teaching consistently reaches the highest level and sustains its transformational impact for all pupils. No significant weaknesses or areas of underperformance were identified in the inspection.
