Winterton Community Academy is a friendly, caring and inclusive secondary school where pupils feel safe and relationships between staff and pupils are positive. Inspectors judged all four key areas to be good, and safeguarding is effective. Pupils behave well in lessons and social times, parents praise the supportive environment and communication, and pupils with SEND are carefully identified and well supported. The school is a single-academy trust and this was its first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic; it has a significant number of recently appointed leaders and governors. The curriculum has been reviewed in many subjects and is thoughtfully sequenced, with reading identified as a barrier and vocabulary support built into topics. Teachers generally have strong subject knowledge and use questioning to check understanding. Personal development is well considered, including online safety, healthy lifestyles, relationships, careers and the world of work, and staff feel supported with workload and wellbeing. The main areas for improvement are the consistency of curriculum implementation and the strength of leadership oversight. In some subjects, activities do not help pupils learn important knowledge securely or produce high-quality work. Senior leaders and governors do not yet have close enough oversight of improvement work, and quality-assurance processes do not give them clear information about what needs to change and whether actions are working.
