Pivot Academy

Pivot Academy is a secondary school aimed at supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs. The recent inspection identified that the school is currently performing at a level that requires improvement in key areas such as the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, and leadership. While there are notable strengths in personal development, leading to a supportive environment, there are concerns regarding pupil behaviour and inconsistencies in the implementation of the curriculum, particularly in reading skills. The school has faced unique challenges, with many students joining with significant gaps in learning or low attendance, and it has recently opened an additional site to accommodate a growing number of pupils.

Strengths

• Pupils feel safe and supported by staff.
• Strong personal development program responsive to individual needs.
• Effective careers information, advice, and guidance for pupils.
• Improvements in pupil attendance from very low starting points.
• Positive feedback from parents regarding the school's impact on their children.

Areas for Improvement

• Pupil behaviour is consistently poor with high suspension rates.
• The curriculum lacks ambition and does not sufficiently address the reading needs of pupils.
• Staff do not implement the reading program consistently across all sites.
• The sixth-form curriculum offer is limited and underdeveloped.

In 2025–26, 11.3% of pupils at Pivot Academy were on SEN support (nationally 18.4%) and 72.6% had an education, health and care (EHC) plan (nationally 7.9%).

Source: Department for Education, Special educational needs in England (the 2025–26 school census). SEN support is extra help in school without an EHC plan. National figures are for all state-funded independent school schools. Counts are as published, with small numbers not hidden.
