Founded in 1670 and initially endowed by Frances, Viscountess Lumley, the school was developed from two single-sex grammar schools in Thornton-le-Dale and Pickering, unified in 1904/05.

It has over 1,253 pupils and is currently an academy, part of the Coast and Vale Learning Trust.
