Journey Education Group is a small independent school that has made a strong start since it was registered in January 2025. This first standard inspection found that safeguarding standards are met and all independent school standards are met, with attendance and behaviour judged particularly strong. Pupils, most of whom arrive after disrupted education and all of whom have education, health and care plans, quickly settle into a welcoming, safe and highly positive environment. Staff build trusting relationships and help pupils improve attendance, self-regulation, confidence and readiness for the next stage. Most other areas are at the expected standard: pupils make secure progress from their starting points, the curriculum is ambitious, inclusion is well supported, leadership is purposeful, and pastoral and personal development are strengths. The main development points are in the precision and consistency of teaching and literacy support. Some pupils' gaps in writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar are not closing quickly enough, and support for functional but not yet fluent readers and early writing is less embedded. Teaching is stronger in key stage 4, but it is not consistently sophisticated elsewhere, and some learning activities do not reinforce the most important knowledge precisely enough. Careers provision and some wider personal development opportunities are still being embedded. The school is also operating beyond its registration agreement by admitting pupils outside its registered age range, although it has notified the Department for Education.
