Edan Court School is a small independent special school for pupils with autism and social, emotional and mental health needs, all of whom have education, health and care plans. This was its first standard inspection since it was registered in June 2025. Inspectors found the school meeting the expected standard across all evaluated areas, with safeguarding standards met and all independent school standards met. Pupils, many of whom have experienced time out of education or other disruption, settle quickly into a calm and supportive environment, attend more regularly than in their previous settings, and make secure progress from their individual starting points. The school's main strengths include a well-designed curriculum built around distinct pathways, strong knowledge of pupils' needs, effective therapeutic and SEND support, clear behaviour expectations, and a well-crafted personal development programme that builds independence and life skills. Leadership and governance are effective, parents and staff are positive, and leaders have an accurate understanding of the school's provision. Concerns are focused rather than systemic. Teaching does not always maximise planned learning, especially in the primary nurture pathway where provision can be less precisely matched to pupils' individual targets. Leaders' use of data, including behaviour incident data, does not always reveal wider patterns to inform improvement. Some extended provision and wider opportunities have been secured but are not yet fully tailored or implemented to maximise impact for individual pupils.

- Uses distinct curriculum pathways informed by pupils' starting points so learning generally builds securely
- Provides effective therapeutic interventions and targeted academic support, including for SEND and speech and language needs
- Maintains clear behaviour expectations and helps pupils regulate their emotions, with bullying rare and resolved well
- Offers a well-crafted personal development curriculum covering safety, relationships, health, equality and community experiences
- Has effective leadership and governance, with well-qualified staff, appropriate professional learning and positive parent and staff views
- Meets all independent school standards and safeguarding standards
- Works effectively with previous settings, commissioners and families to understand pupils' needs and support transition
Areas for Improvement
- Lesson activities and teaching approaches do not always maximise pupils' learning of intended knowledge and skills
- Learning in the primary nurture pathway sometimes does not build precisely towards pupils' individual targets, slowing progress
- Leaders' analysis of data sometimes gives limited insight into wider patterns and trends across the school
- Use of behaviour incident data is not refined enough to evaluate impact and inform further improvement
- Extended provision and wider opportunities are secured but not yet fully tailored or implemented to maximise impact for individual pupils
