Markeaton Primary School is a highly inclusive, caring and happy school where pupils feel safe and achieve well. The school's values of care, curiosity and determination are evident in pupils' kindness, responsibility and exemplary conduct. An ambitious and meticulously planned curriculum provides a rich academic and cultural programme, and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are identified and supported strongly. Reading is a high priority, and children get off to a strong start in Reception. Behaviour and attitudes and personal development are outstanding. Pupils benefit from excellent pastoral support, a wide range of clubs and experiences, and strong opportunities to become leaders and active citizens. Parents unanimously recommend the school, staff are proud to work there, and skilled governors help the school continue to improve. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The main area for improvement is that in some subjects teachers do not provide enough opportunities for pupils to practise using and applying what they have learned. As a result, pupils do not always secure or deepen their knowledge and skills as well as they could. This was the first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the school was not given an overall effectiveness grade under the current inspection framework.
