St Peter and Paul Catholic Primary School, Mawdesley, is a very small Roman Catholic primary school currently led by an acting headteacher after some leadership disruption since the previous inspection; a new headteacher takes up post in September 2026. Inspectors found the school performing in line with expectations overall, with inclusion the only area needing attention and safeguarding standards met. Pupils achieve well in most subjects, attendance is above the national average, behaviour is positive, and the curriculum is broad and well sequenced. Leaders and governors have an accurate view of the school and have driven sustained improvements, while personal development and pastoral support are well regarded. Notable strengths include a calm and respectful school culture, rare bullying, effective attendance monitoring, strong early reading provision, and a well-structured personal development programme. Governance has improved significantly since the previous inspection, staff development is aligned to school priorities, and pupil premium funding is used well to support disadvantaged pupils. Pupils value leadership roles, clubs, trips and collective worship, and they leave well prepared for life in modern Britain. The main concern is inclusion. Support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities and for others with barriers to learning is not yet consistently matched to need, adaptations are not always effective, and some pupils still do not get the right help at the right time. There are also weaknesses in writing: pupils do not always have enough time to review and improve their work, and expectations for high-attaining writers are inconsistent, meaning some capable writers do not reach the standards they could. Next steps focus on using precise information about pupils’ starting points, SEND and gaps in learning; providing more opportunities to review written work; and raising expectations for high-attaining writers.

  • Some pupils do not receive the right help at the right time, limiting their progress.
  • Adaptations and inclusive practices are not yet fully embedded or consistently effective.
  • Pupils do not always have sufficient time to review and improve their work.
  • Expectations for high-attaining writers are inconsistent, so the most capable writers do not always reach their potential.
  • Some pupils repeat errors because written work is not reviewed enough.
  • Staff do not always have or use precise information about pupils’ starting points, SEND and gaps in learning to adjust teaching consistently well.
