Inspectors found Westonzoyland Community Primary School to be performing well across the key areas inspected, with pupils describing a friendly, welcoming and inclusive school where they are happy and behaviour is calm. The school's values support positive attitudes, bullying is rare and not tolerated, and pupils take on responsibilities such as well-being ambassadors. Reading is a notable strength: pupils learn to read from Reception, skilled staff build confidence and accuracy, and pupils who struggle are helped to catch up. The curriculum has recently been revised so that pupils build skills and understanding from pre-school to Year 6, and pupils enjoy the more challenging work. However, because the changes are recent, some pupils have historic gaps in knowledge, and assessment is not yet used well enough in some subjects to check what pupils know and remember before new learning is introduced. Writing is less well established, with inconsistent expectations for handwriting, spelling and punctuation, so the quality of some pupils' written work is uneven across the curriculum. Published 2024 outcomes, particularly for pupils reaching the higher standard, do not yet fully reflect the recent improvements. Other strengths include effective support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, strong early years provision and transition, high-quality pastoral care, and a wide range of clubs, trips and responsibilities that develop pupils' independence and resilience. Leaders and governors understand the school's strengths and development areas, have drawn on local authority support and training, and have been mindful of staff workload during a significant period of change. Safeguarding arrangements are effective.
