Wings School Notts is an independent special school for pupils with education, health and care plans, many of whom have social, emotional and mental health needs or autism. The school was judged to be meeting the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards are met and all independent school standards are met. Leaders have stabilised staffing, strengthened roles and worked with the proprietor to improve provision after a challenging period; parents are unanimously positive, pupils feel safe and well supported, and most move on to further education. The school’s work is highly inclusive and therapeutic. Pupils typically start well below age-related expectations but make steady progress, develop independence and confidence, and benefit from a broad curriculum, strong pastoral care, extensive enrichment, sports, arts and careers guidance. Behaviour is largely calm, relationships are strong, and attendance has improved significantly for many pupils. The main areas for continued development are the curriculum, which is still being adapted to pupils’ needs, and staff engagement skills, where some less experienced staff are still developing. The school’s flexible approach for the small number of severely absent pupils is at an early stage, so its impact on the lowest attenders cannot yet be confirmed.
