The View School

The View School is a specialist independent school for pupils aged 11 to 19 with social, emotional and mental health needs, most of whom also have autism and all of whom have an education, health and care plan. This was its first standard inspection since registration in September 2024, and the school met all independent school standards, with safeguarding standards also met. Inspectors found the school performing strongly in attendance and behaviour, inclusion, and personal development and wellbeing; pupils attend regularly, behave well and benefit from a wide range of experiences, including forest learning, residential trips and work experience. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, and leadership and governance were judged to meet the expected standard, with pupils making clear progress from typically low starting points, gaining useful qualifications and moving on to education, employment or training. The main area for improvement is consistency in literacy, particularly writing. Teachers do not always help pupils apply their phonics knowledge to spell new words, and errors in spelling and handwriting are not corrected promptly enough, which limits some pupils' fluency when writing across the curriculum. Leaders have been asked to embed agreed essential literacy strategies more consistently and adapt tasks to support reading and writing development. Two compliance concerns were also identified: the school has exceeded its registered capacity of 26 pupils, with 27 on roll, and had not informed the Department for Education of this, and it uses one unregistered alternative provision. These sit alongside otherwise positive findings about leadership, governance and the school's ambitious, well-sequenced curriculum.

• Leadership and governance are strong, with an advisory board providing appropriate expertise and challenge
• Staff benefit from an open culture of supportive ambition and research-informed professional development
• Pupils feel safe, bullying is very rare, and positive relationships are built on mutual respect
