The Becklands School

This was a material change inspection of The Becklands School, an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, all of whom have EHC plans. The school asked to widen its age range from 11–18 to 9–18 and increase its maximum pupil number from 30 to 50. Inspectors concluded that the school is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if those changes are implemented. Leadership and management are a clear strength: leaders understand the standards, check compliance regularly, and have adapted policies, staffing, spaces and resources for younger pupils. The curriculum is ambitious and sequenced, includes suitable key stage 2 content, and is delivered through flexible pathways that keep pupils’ SEMH needs central. Teaching, assessment, PSHE, careers and enrichment are well matched to pupils’ needs, and safeguarding and accessibility arrangements meet requirements. The report identifies no significant weaknesses or compliance concerns. It notes that the school operates over two sites and currently uses two unregistered alternative provisions, but does not flag these as failures against the standards. Overall, the evidence supports the proposed material changes.
