Maple Tree Primary School is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and/or mental health needs. All pupils have an education, health and care plan, are placed by local authorities, and many have previously struggled to access mainstream education. At this February 2026 standard inspection, the school is performing at the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards and all independent school standards are met. The school was last inspected in January 2023, when overall effectiveness was judged good. Pupils benefit from an ambitious, inclusive and personalised curriculum that prioritises communication, interaction, independence and wellbeing. Staff know pupils very well, routines are consistent, and most pupils make steady progress from their varied starting points. Pupils generally learn to read and write securely, develop practical life skills, and take part in enrichment and leadership activities. Behaviour is typically calm and focused, bullying is rare, and pupils feel safe. Leaders work closely with families, external professionals, social care and local schools to support pupils well. There are some areas for improvement. A few pupils do not develop phonics and handwriting as swiftly as they could because of variability in staff expertise and, at times, limited handwriting practice. Attendance support is thoughtful but does not always overcome pupils' barriers to attending regularly. The proprietor also needs to strengthen oversight of how effective governance is and how well resources are used to improve provision. Overall, the school is meeting expected standards and has a clear platform for further improvement.
