Aurora Chaldon School is a new special school for pupils with autism and education, health and care plans, many of whom have had disrupted or negative experiences of education before joining. The school has created a warm, welcoming and highly supportive community where pupils feel safe and included. Safeguarding, welfare, personal development and pastoral care are clear strengths, and attendance and behaviour are improving. Pupils benefit from therapeutic support, a coherent PSHE curriculum, life-skills and careers preparation, and a range of enrichment activities. However, the school's academic provision is not yet consistently effective. Pupils' progress varies across subjects, and those at the earliest stages of reading, writing and mathematics do not receive precise enough support to catch up quickly. In some subjects, the curriculum is not taught as intended because teachers do not consistently understand pupils' next academic steps, and assessment is not used sharply enough to plan learning. As a result, some independent school standards relating to the quality of education are not met. Leadership has rightly focused on pastoral care and inclusion, but this has come at the expense of sufficiently rigorous attention to teaching quality and academic achievement. Leaders and governors understand the priorities for improvement, and new systems for inclusion are beginning to make a difference, but these are still early in their impact. The school remains a caring and aspirational environment, yet it must now strengthen teaching, assessment and curriculum delivery so that all pupils achieve as well as they can.

- Learning activities are not routinely adjusted to pupils' needs, limiting access to the full curriculum.
- Assessment does not consistently identify pupils' next steps in learning.

- Inclusion systems for academic needs are new and have not closed knowledge gaps quickly enough.

- Independent school standards for quality of education and leadership/management are not met.
- High staff turnover in the school's first year has affected consistency.
