Bright Futures School is a small independent special school for pupils with education, health and care plans, most of whom have autism as their primary need. Many pupils have had disrupted or anxious starts to education, and all have complex SEND. The school is performing well overall: safeguarding standards are met, all independent school standards are met, and personal development and wellbeing are a standout strength. Pupils are well cared for, safe and increasingly independent. Leaders provide highly effective pastoral support and tailored careers guidance. Pupils take part in high-quality activities that build life skills, and all Year 11 pupils move on to suitable colleges or training. Attendance is high, behaviour is positive, and pupils are polite, engaged and supportive of one another. Most make progress across the curriculum, with particular strength in communication and language, and many gain functional skills qualifications. There are still areas to improve. Some pupils could achieve more, especially where the curriculum does not stretch beyond foundational levels. Staff do not consistently identify and address gaps in phonics and misconceptions, and handwriting provision is variable, which slows fluency in reading and writing for some. In a few subjects, support and staff subject knowledge are not consistently strong enough to maximise progress, and a small number of pupils' learning needs are not fully catered for. The next steps rightly focus on these points.
