St Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School, Osbaldeston is a very small voluntary aided Catholic primary school with 72 pupils on roll at the time of inspection and a higher-than-average proportion of pupils receiving SEN support. Inspected on 30 June 2026, the school meets safeguarding standards and is judged to be fulfilling expected standards across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development. Leaders have navigated considerable change while keeping pupils' interests central, and pupils benefit from a welcoming, values-led community in which they feel known, safe and well supported. Pupils achieve well overall and are generally prepared for the next stage. National test outcomes are broadly in line with national averages in reading, writing and mathematics, and disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND progress well from their starting points. Attendance is consistently above national averages, persistent absence is low, behaviour is positive, and early years provision gives children a strong start. Personal development is a notable strength, with pupils learning about safety, wellbeing, healthy relationships, diversity, charity and leadership. Leaders have improved reading and writing through new phonics and writing curricula and high-quality staff training. The main areas for development are that some pupils still have gaps in handwriting and times-table knowledge, which can limit extended writing and more complex mathematical problem-solving, and these gaps are not always addressed quickly enough. Leaders also need to tighten the consistency of SEND identification, assessment and support so that leaders, staff, parents and carers share the same understanding. Governors are committed and fulfil statutory duties, but their monitoring is not yet sharp enough to provide consistently purposeful support and challenge to leaders.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.
