Pilgrims' Cross CofE Aided Primary School is a larger-than-average Church of England primary where safeguarding is effective and inclusion is a clear strength. Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, especially the most vulnerable, and staff identify needs quickly. Pupils with SEND, disadvantaged pupils, service family pupils and those known to social care make positive progress from their starting points, and attendance is high. Pupils behave well, feel safe and are proud of their school, and pastoral care is a notable strength. The school's curriculum, teaching, early years, leadership and personal development are generally secure. Teaching has improved rapidly in reading, writing and mathematics, and early reading and phonics are taught well. Governors and leaders know the school well, staff feel supported, and parents are overwhelmingly positive. However, achievement is the main concern: by the end of key stage 2, too many pupils do not reach expected standards, particularly in writing, and published outcomes in reading, writing and mathematics are below national averages. Disadvantaged pupils also have lower outcomes than national averages, though their progress from starting points is positive. Assessment and curriculum delivery need sharper attention. In writing and some wider curriculum subjects, checks on pupils' understanding are not consistently effective, so misconceptions and gaps are not always addressed. Learning in some wider subjects does not build over time, and some lesson activities are not designed well enough to build on what pupils know. Leaders have already recognised these issues and taken action, with signs of improvement, but the impact is not yet consistent across the full curriculum or by the end of key stage 2.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
