betaWoodham Academy is a mixed secondary school for pupils aged 11–16, located at Washington Crescent DL5 4AX in the town of Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, England. The school opened in 1970 as Woodham Comprehensive School under the Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme. After adopting academy status in 2012, it was renamed Woodham Academy. In 2019, the school became a part of the Eden Learning Trust.
Woodham Academy enrolls 987 students (as of 2022) with a maximum capacity of 1,100. It offers a broad curriculum and features a range of facilities, including: 9 science labs, 2 music suites, a technology complex with 6 specialist workshops, a textiles studio, a sports hall, a gymnasium, a drama studio, a swimming pool, and multiple IT suites.
Academically, Woodham Academy aims to provide a challenging and varied curriculum, preparing students for success in a variety of employment sectors and further education options. They offer a range of GCSE and vocational qualifications, with a focus on achievement for all. Previously, the school had a house system that granted points to students for hard work and participation in extracurricular activities, but the system was retired in 2015.
Woodham Academy has undergone a partial rebuild or refurbishment, with expectations for decision regarding government funding early in 2022. In addition, the school contributes to the community with programs such as the Sports Academy, which offers elite athlete coaching opportunities in a range of sports.
