Oakwood Learning Centre is a small independent special school, run by Witherslack Holdings PLC, that predominantly supports pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, autism and ADHD. Following a standard inspection in May 2026, safeguarding standards were met. Inspectors graded attendance and behaviour, leadership and governance, and achievement as exceptional, while personal development and wellbeing, curriculum and teaching, and inclusion were graded strong standard. Overall, the school provides a highly nurturing, child-centred education that transforms the lives of vulnerable pupils who have often experienced significant gaps in schooling. The report highlights exceptional attendance and behaviour, with pupils showing remarkable progress in their attitudes to learning. Leadership is highly reflective and improvement-focused, with strong governance and a relentless focus on disadvantaged pupils. Pupils benefit from a rich enrichment programme, high-quality pastoral care, a bespoke careers offer, and embedded inclusive practice. Pupils with SEND are very well supported, make rapid progress from their starting points, and move on to ambitious destinations. The main areas for development are the precision of adaptive teaching and vocabulary focus in some lessons, and the need to sustain recent improvements so that exceptional standards are achieved in all areas. Some changes to the breadth of qualifications studied are recent. No significant weaknesses were identified in attendance, behaviour or leadership, and the school's inclusive, family-like ethos is a key strength.
