Folkestone St Mary's Church of England Primary Academy is a friendly, inclusive church school where pupils feel safe, welcomed and part of a harmonious community. Safeguarding standards are met. Leadership and governance, inclusion, personal development and well-being, and early years are all meeting expectations. Children get a calm and purposeful start in the Nursery and generally achieve well by the end of Reception, though writing and some adult-child interactions need further development. Leaders are committed and staff morale is positive, with governors providing appropriate support and challenge and parents speaking highly of the school. However, achievement, attendance and behaviour, and curriculum and teaching require attention. Pupils do not consistently remember key knowledge across subjects, and the quality of their work varies too much between classes and subjects. Assessment is not used well enough to build on prior learning, and some pupils do not secure foundational knowledge in reading, writing and mathematics. Attendance is a significant concern, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, and persistent absence has been too high, although new leaders have acted promptly and attendance this term is stronger. Behaviour and relationships are positive. The school is a single-academy trust with a Christian character and a Nursery for two- and three-year-olds. The headteacher took post in September 2025 and two assistant headteachers have been appointed. Leaders recognise the areas needing improvement and have begun to address them, including attendance tracking, writing in early years and multiplication tables, where pupils have achieved better than national averages.

Areas for Improvement

- Some pupils do not secure foundational knowledge in reading, writing and mathematics.
- Phonics catch-up support is not always precise enough for pupils who begin to fall behind.
- Writing teaching does not consistently support pupils to produce work that reflects their understanding.
- Too many pupils, particularly disadvantaged pupils, miss school regularly, and persistent absence has been high.
- Early years staff do not always have the expertise to secure high-quality interactions that develop children's vocabulary and communication.
- The attendance strategy is not yet fully embedded and must be strengthened to raise attendance for all pupils.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
