Harwich and Dovercourt High School was judged to require significant improvement after its January 2026 full inspection, and this June 2026 monitoring visit checked progress in the areas flagged then. Safeguarding standards are met, and leaders, with trust support, have an accurate view of the school and are taking effective action. Attendance has improved noticeably through a coherent strategy, work with families and agencies, and support such as The Beacon, although absence and persistent absence remain too high. Pupils still experience uneven quality of education. GCSE achievement is low, especially in English and mathematics, and disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes are weak, with the gap to their peers widening. Teaching varies too much; low-level disruption is too frequent, some pupils do not consistently feel safe or confident bullying will be handled well, and support for pupils with SEND or disadvantage is inconsistent. Reading and phonics support is a strength, but writing support and opportunities for pupils to apply learning are underdeveloped. Leadership and governance are strengthening, staff development and wellbeing are considered, and pastoral care and careers guidance are effective. However, participation in personal development is not tracked closely enough, families hold mixed views, and several improvement initiatives are too early to show impact. A new executive headteacher has been appointed since the full inspection, and the school needs to make urgent progress on achievement and more consistent teaching, behaviour and inclusion.
