Brickyard Barn Outdoor Learning Centre is a specialist independent school for pupils with autism, all of whom have education, health and care plans. Inspectors found it performing at the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing, with safeguarding met and all independent school standards met. The inspection took place after the school amalgamated two sites, so leaders are now overseeing provision across Brickyard Barn and Starbold Farm. The school's strongest features are its caring, inclusive ethos and the quality of relationships between staff and pupils. Pupils feel safe, behave well, attend in line with similar pupils nationally, and benefit from a broad curriculum and personal development programme that builds confidence, communication and independence. Staff know pupils well, adapt learning purposefully, and provide effective targeted support, including for disadvantaged pupils, so most pupils achieve well from their starting points and are prepared for their next stage. Leaders know the school well and are taking appropriate action, but some improvement work remains. Teaching quality is not yet consistently strong in all areas, especially in extending pupils' reading and writing, and pupils do not always get consistent support or challenge to reach their potential. Leaders also need to sharpen how they evaluate curriculum impact across both sites, embed careers education and personal development more deeply, and improve communication with staff about workload.
