Flegg High Ormiston Academy is a secondary comprehensive academy within Ormiston Academies Trust. Following this February 2025 inspection, the quality of education requires improvement, while behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management are good. The school had previously been graded requires improvement. Inspectors found that pupils feel safe and are generally happy, behaviour has improved significantly, and attendance is improving, although it remains not high. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. The school provides a broad and ambitious curriculum through trust subject curriculums, and personal development is promoted well through PSHE, enrichment, pupil leadership and comprehensive careers guidance. Pupils with SEND are included and supported, and recent improvements have been made to SEND systems. However, the quality of education is not yet consistently high enough. Teachers do not always use assessment well enough to identify misconceptions or address work that is not of a high enough standard, and pedagogical choices do not consistently promote discussion and deeper thinking. Staff also do not always adapt learning precisely enough for pupils with SEND, and reading for pleasure is not widespread. The inspection took place during a period of leadership turbulence. The trust has taken decisive action, including establishing an interim advisory board, partnering the school with a high-performing school, and appointing the principal of Ormiston Venture Academy as senior principal in January 2025. Leaders’ actions are helping to stabilise and improve the school, and staff feel consulted and part of the improvement journey.
