• Gaps in learning develop from the early years and are not closed quickly enough.
• Pupils are not as academically prepared for the next stage of education as they should be.
• Early writing skills are weak, with inconsistencies in letter formation and spelling.
• Attendance is below national averages and too many pupils are persistently absent.
• Teaching is inconsistent and does not always provide practice, consolidation or active participation.
• Teachers do not respond quickly enough to pupils' learning needs during lessons.
• Some pupils are left waiting to move on and lack opportunities to deepen understanding.
• The teaching of writing is variable, with expectations for spelling, handwriting and grammar not consistently high.
• The early years curriculum is not clearly defined enough, so some activities lack purpose.
• Children in the early years do not achieve as well as they should and are not fully prepared for Year 1.
• Staff sometimes miss opportunities to extend children's communication and language in the early years.
• Improvement work is at an early stage and leaders' actions have not been timely enough.
