Mark Hall Academy is a calm, orderly and welcoming school where pupils are respectful and feel safe. Behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management are good. Pupils benefit from strong pastoral care, a wide enrichment offer and a very strong careers programme, and safeguarding is effective. The school is part of the BMAT Education trust, which provides effective challenge and support, and leaders are mindful of staff workload. The main area needing improvement is the quality of education. The curriculum has been revised to be broad, balanced and sequenced, but it is not implemented consistently: teaching methods are not always matched to curriculum aims or adapted to pupils’ needs, and classroom assessment does not accurately identify what pupils know. As a result, pupils do not learn the intended curriculum well over time, misconceptions persist and some are not well prepared for later content or qualifications. Pupils with SEND are accurately identified and supported, but the weaknesses in implementation affect them too. Attendance is another concern: some pupils are absent too often, although the school’s improved work with families is beginning to have a positive effect. Leaders are not complacent and understand the priorities for improvement. This inspection follows a previous judgement of requires improvement, and under current arrangements no overall effectiveness grade was awarded.
