The school was established in 1967 and converted into an academy status in September 2022, sponsored by the Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Trust.

St Benedict's has a distinctive Catholic ethos with the mission of encouraging students to achieve their God-given potential, fostering wisdom, compassion, and resilience in its learning community. It is a high-achieving school with a strong track record, supporting students in achieving entry to Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Students at St Benedict's engage in a broad curriculum, following the National Curriculum, and also study Religious Education, which is compulsory at GCSE level. Sixth Form students must take a General Religious Education course, but it is non-examined and does not confer any certificate.

The school is known for its academically rigorous approach, with Religious Education and Mathematics key components of its learning strategy. St Benedict's also offers the facilities and programs that enable a wide range of students who travel from surrounding towns and villages to access Catholic secondary education.
