First Bridge School

Ofsted carried out a material change inspection at First Bridge School, an independent special school, to assess whether it is likely to meet the independent school standards if it extends its age range to include pupils up to age 11. Inspectors found the proposed change is well planned and the school is likely to meet the relevant standards if implemented. Leaders have a clear rationale, focused on a small number of pupils for whom staying at the school is in their best interests. The report highlights strong leadership and management, including a thorough risk assessment covering safeguarding, supervision and curriculum for older pupils, with clear mitigation. Safeguarding systems are clear and well understood, and staff-to-pupil supervision is robust. The curriculum is ambitious and appropriately adapted for pupils with complex SEND, teaching is well matched to need, and assessment tracks progress against national expectations and personalised targets. Personal development provision is well planned and is being extended to prepare older pupils for independence, relationships, online safety and future settings. No concerns or weaknesses are identified. The inspection found the school has the capacity to implement the change successfully, and the relevant standards across leadership, quality of education and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development are likely to be met.
