Milton School is performing well overall. Inspectors found pupils achieve well, including those with complex SEND, and that leaders have built carefully sequenced curriculum pathways that help pupils steadily develop language, reading, writing, mathematics and broader knowledge. Teaching is consistently adapted to pupils’ specific needs, progress is checked closely, and pupils take pride in their work and know how to improve. Attendance has improved rapidly over recent years, persistent absence has declined, and behaviour is calm and respectful, with bullying and serious misbehaviour rare and handled quickly. The school’s inclusive approach is a clear strength. All pupils have special educational needs and/or disabilities, and all have an EHC plan, so leaders’ work to identify needs quickly, adapt provision, use therapies and targeted funding, and prepare pupils for adulthood is central. Personal development, careers guidance and extracurricular activities are well planned, and safeguarding arrangements meet requirements. Leadership has been stable and effective since the school joined the Venn Academy Trust, with strong support and challenge from the interim executive board and a sustained programme of staff training. The main area for further work, identified in the report’s next steps, is refining the curriculum and classroom practices to meet pupils’ increasingly complex needs. This is a focused improvement point rather than a sign of wider weakness: inspectors found no graded area requiring attention and judged the school to be strong across the board.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
