Mountbatten Primary School is a caring and inclusive school in Hull, part of Venn Academy Trust. It serves around 280 pupils, with a well-above-average proportion eligible for free school meals and high location deprivation. Safeguarding standards are met, and inclusion is a relative strength: leaders are committed to supporting pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, use additional funding strategically, and have built strong relationships with families and external agencies. Pupils feel safe, cared for and a sense of belonging, attendance is improving, and phonics outcomes are broadly in line with national standards. However, the school is not yet performing consistently well across the curriculum. Most areas reviewed need attention. Over time, Year 6 outcomes have typically been below national averages, and pupils, especially those with SEND, do not secure handwriting and spelling skills quickly enough. Assessment is not used sharply enough to address gaps in knowledge, and pupils do not remember enough in wider subjects. In the early years, Reception children's independent tasks are often poorly matched to their needs, and some struggle with letter formation and applying phonics to reading. There are also concerns about pupils' understanding of British values and protected characteristics, with some derogatory language becoming normalised and some pupils showing disrespectful views. Leaders' self-evaluation is overly generous, and monitoring in wider areas such as personal development is not precise enough, so improvement in those areas is slower. The trust provides strong support, governance and safeguarding oversight are particular strengths, and staff morale is positive, but leaders need to sharpen assessment, monitoring, early years provision and personal development to secure better outcomes for all pupils.

Areas for Improvement

  • Pupils, especially those with SEND, do not secure handwriting and spelling skills quickly enough.
  • Handwriting and spelling difficulties persist into key stage 2 and lower the quality of pupils' work.
  • Staff do not ensure pupils apply phonics knowledge precisely enough in spelling.
  • Pupils do not remember enough content across wider subjects such as geography, history and religious education.
  • Assessment information is not used consistently to identify and address gaps in pupils' knowledge.
  • Teachers' checks on learning do not always accurately inform next steps, so misunderstandings persist.
  • Children in Reception are not developing suitably detailed knowledge across the curriculum.
  • Many Reception children struggle to form letters correctly and to apply phonics to read words.
  • Reception independent tasks are often not well matched to children's needs or intended outcomes.
  • Pupils' understanding of British values and protected characteristics is underdeveloped.
  • Some pupils show disrespectful views and use derogatory language, including language linked to sexual orientation.
  • Leaders' evaluation of the school is overly generous.
  • Monitoring in wider areas, such as personal development, does not identify issues with enough precision.
  • Improvement in some wider aspects of the school's work is less rapid because monitoring is imprecise.
  • Overall absence remains above the national average, although it is improving.
  • Disadvantaged pupils' reading and mathematics outcomes remain below national non-disadvantaged benchmarks over the latest three years.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
