Orchard Manor School is a newly opened independent special school (registered July 2025) for pupils who all have an education, health and care plan with a primary diagnosis of autism. This was its first standard inspection. Inspectors found a highly inclusive school that has quickly transformed the lives of many pupils and their families, most of whom arrive with significant gaps and negative prior experiences of education. Safeguarding standards are met. The school is strong across achievement, attendance and behaviour, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Pupils achieve highly, close learning gaps, read well, and are exceptionally well prepared for adulthood. Behaviour is exemplary and attendance is high, supported by trusting relationships and a gradual transition process. Leaders have a forensic understanding of individual needs, and staff feel well supported and proud to work there. The proprietor provides effective challenge and support, and all independent school standards are met. The main area for development is the curriculum for the earliest stages of reading and writing, where the precise knowledge pupils need is not yet clearly defined. This slows progress for a small number of pupils. Leaders have already been asked to sequence this knowledge logically. Overall, the school is performing very well and has a strong foundation for continued improvement.
