Shaftesbury High School has improved significantly since its previous inspection and is now a strong, warm and highly supportive special school. Pupils, all of whom have education, health and care plans, benefit from high expectations, a personalised curriculum and staff who understand their complex needs. Behaviour is exemplary, and pupils are kind, calm and enthusiastic about learning. The school’s personal development provision is exceptional, with rich community experiences, travel training, work experience and leadership opportunities helping pupils become more independent and confident. Reading is prioritised well, including phonics and early language support, and the sixth form prepares students effectively for adulthood through a well-planned programme and suitable destinations. Leadership and governance are strong, staff receive high-quality training and support, and safeguarding is effective. The main area for further work is that curriculum design in a few wider subjects is not yet fully embedded, which can limit how deeply pupils develop their understanding in those areas.

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
