High Green Primary School is a welcoming, caring primary school where pupils feel safe and happy. The inspection found the school performing well across the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. Pupils respond well to high expectations, classrooms are calm and focused, and well-being is a clear priority. The school has made effective curriculum changes after previous low Year 6 outcomes, and pupils’ achievement has improved significantly. Support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is a notable strength, with well-integrated adaptations helping all pupils engage fully in learning. Reading is a priority from the start, phonics teaching is expert, and early years is a growing strength with clear routines and strong support for independence. Pupils benefit from a broad curriculum and a wide range of enrichment, including outdoor learning, arts, music, sports and leadership opportunities. Safeguarding arrangements are effective, and governors provide effective challenge and support. The main areas for improvement are in the foundation subjects. In some subjects, staff are not clear enough about the most important knowledge pupils should know and remember, which limits how learning builds over time. The school also needs to make sure curriculum checks are carried out consistently across all subjects so leaders can quickly identify what is working well and where improvement is needed. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic, and the school has a higher-than-average number of pupils with an education, health and care plan.
