Lound Junior School is a welcoming, inclusive school where pupils feel safe, behave well and benefit from a broad curriculum. Inspectors found the school performing securely overall, with particular strengths in inclusion, leadership and personal development. Pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, make appropriate progress, can talk confidently about their learning and are generally well prepared for their next stage of education. The school’s work to support pupils with SEND is a notable strength, and safeguarding standards are met. Leaders have a sharp focus on reading and mathematics and have made changes to the curriculum and teaching to help pupils revisit and remember important knowledge. However, teaching and curriculum implementation are not consistently strong across all subjects and classes. Outcomes for disadvantaged pupils are mixed and remain below national averages in combined reading, writing and mathematics and in mathematics. Pupils’ understanding of healthy relationships and consent is also limited within the recently introduced PSHE curriculum. The main concern is attendance, which remains below national averages. Some pupils, including pupils with SEND, do not attend school regularly enough and miss important learning and wider opportunities. Leaders have started work to improve this, but it is too early to see rapid and consistent impact across all pupil groups. The school is part of Steel City Schools Partnership and has a headteacher who took up her substantive post in September 2026 and also leads Lound Infants School. Next steps focus on embedding attendance improvements and ensuring consistently effective curriculum implementation.
