Fulmer Infant School is a small, nurturing infant school where pupils are happy and achieve well. Inspectors found the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and early years provision all good, with leadership and management outstanding. Pupils with SEND are identified quickly and supported effectively, early reading and phonics are taught expertly, and the curriculum is broad and ambitious in subjects such as mathematics, art and history. Staff have high expectations, behaviour is strong, and relationships between staff and pupils are very positive. The main areas for improvement are writing, specifically handwriting and spelling, where pupils do not get enough opportunities to practise and some do not consistently apply spelling rules; leaders have begun addressing this. A small number of pupils attend too irregularly and persistent absence is too high for them, meaning they miss out on the full curriculum. The school is working with families and attendance has improved overall. This was the school's first graded inspection in about a decade, following a long period when routine inspection was exempt. The newly appointed leadership team, governors and staff are well regarded by parents, and safeguarding is effective.
