Cambian Walnut Tree Lodge School

This was a material change inspection, not a standard graded inspection. Inspectors assessed whether Cambian Walnut Tree Lodge School is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if the Department for Education approves its request to increase the maximum number of pupils from 18 to 25. The school is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, most of whom have an education, health and care plan, and it is part of Cambian Childcare Ltd, owned by CareTech. The report concludes that the school is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if the proposed change is implemented. Leadership and management are strong, with a robust central team providing effective support and challenge, clear systems for oversight, and regular audits. Safeguarding is prioritised, staff are well trained, records are detailed, and leaders work effectively with external agencies. Health and safety, fire safety and risk assessment arrangements are effective, and pupils are well supervised. Recruitment checks are robust, the single central record is compliant, and the premises provide suitable toilet, washing, medical, therapeutic, academic and outdoor spaces. No significant concerns or weaknesses are identified in relation to the proposed material change. The proprietor has carefully considered staffing, space and risk management to ensure the increase would not negatively affect the existing pupil cohort. Overall, the evidence indicates the school is well placed to meet the relevant standards if the change is approved.
