Newton Longville Church of England Primary School is a caring, inclusive school where pupils feel safe, behave well and are proud to attend. Inspectors found strong early years provision, effective leadership and governance, and a curriculum that prioritises secure foundations in reading and mathematics. Pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, typically achieve well and are well prepared for the next stage of their education. Parents speak highly of the school, and safeguarding standards are met. The school's strengths include a calm and orderly environment, strong pastoral support, well-planned personal development and enrichment, and leaders who understand the school and take effective action to improve it. Staff benefit from well-planned professional development, and governors fulfil their responsibilities and hold leaders to account. Attendance is broadly in line with national averages, although leaders recognise that more work is needed for some groups. The main areas for improvement are consistency in teaching: teachers do not always check pupils' understanding and address misconceptions before moving on, and expectations for handwriting and number formation are not applied consistently across subjects. Attendance for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is not improving quickly enough, and leaders should continue to address barriers to attendance, particularly for pupils at risk of persistent absence. This was a full section 5 inspection of a smaller-than-average Church of England primary school with low levels of deprivation and free school meals.
