Orchard Lea Infant School is an inclusive, welcoming infant school that is performing well overall. Most areas of its work meet the expected standard, while early years provision is a clear strength: children in Reception get off to a flying start through a carefully designed curriculum, strong relationships with families and high-quality interactions. Safeguarding standards are met, and pupils are happy, behave well and feel safe. Leaders have a secure understanding of the school, and governance, staff development and parent partnerships are effective. The school is part of The Orchard Lea Federation and has seen a significant reduction in numbers on roll since the previous inspection; the executive headteacher took up her substantive post in October 2023. Pupils generally achieve well in reading, writing and mathematics, and disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND make suitable progress from their starting points. Attendance has improved and persistent absence has reduced notably. Inclusion is a priority, and staff identify and support pupils who need extra help. However, the most recent phonics screening outcomes were below national average, although leaders have acted decisively to improve current pupils’ phonics knowledge. There is also some inconsistency in teaching modelling and transcription skills, and some staff are not fully clear on how to implement the school’s step-by-step approach for pupils with SEND. Leaders’ next steps focus on embedding recent curriculum and teaching changes so that pupils’ knowledge builds securely over time, and continuing work on transcription, reading fluency and phonics so that achievement is reflected in stronger national test outcomes. Personal development provision is broad and purposeful, but some pupils’ knowledge over time is not yet as deep as leaders intend. Overall, this is a school with strong foundations, effective leadership and a clear capacity to improve further.
