Slyne-with-Hest, St Luke's, Church of England Primary School is a smaller-than-average Church of England primary in the Diocese of Blackburn. This was a full section 5 inspection. Inspectors found the school performing strongly in most areas, with pupils achieving very well in reading, writing and mathematics and attainment significantly above national averages. Attendance is high, behaviour is commendable, and the early years provision is warm, nurturing and effective. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are well supported, and safeguarding standards are met. The school serves a relatively low-deprivation community with low proportions of pupils eligible for free school meals and SEN support. The main strengths are the quality of the curriculum, teaching, early years provision, inclusion and pupils' personal development. Pupils are confident, kind and respectful, and they benefit from a broad, well-sequenced curriculum enriched by community links. Staff are proud to work at the school, and parents are highly positive. Leaders have created a happy, inclusive culture where pupils feel safe and belong. The key areas for development concern leadership and governance. Governors do not have the same depth of oversight of curriculum subjects beyond English and mathematics, and they do not consistently check that spending, including pupil premium funding, is having the desired impact on vulnerable pupils. Professional development needs to have a more sustained and widespread impact, and early handwriting guidance is not yet fully embedded. Published data also shows disadvantaged pupils' attainment in reading, writing and mathematics is well below national averages, with large disadvantage gaps.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.
