St Oswald’s Roman Catholic Primary School is a welcoming, high-performing primary where pupils enjoy school and are proud of their community. Inspectors found pupils’ behaviour and personal development to be particular strengths: pupils are polite, focused and mature, and they benefit from exceptionally well-planned opportunities to understand diversity, British values and their role in the wider world. Children settle quickly in the early years, staff know pupils well, and most pupils achieve well and are prepared for secondary school. The school has an ambitious curriculum designed for mixed-age classes, a strong focus on reading, and effective support for pupils with SEND. Leadership and governance are well connected to the community and manage staff workload sensibly. Safeguarding is effective. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the pandemic, following a long period of exemption after its previous outstanding judgement, and a new headteacher is now in post; schools inspected from September 2024 no longer receive an overall effectiveness grade. There are nonetheless important areas to improve. In a small number of subjects, including mathematics, the school has not set out clearly enough the order in which key knowledge should be taught, so teachers are sometimes unsure what to emphasise and pupils can develop gaps or misconceptions. Assessment is not used consistently well to check understanding and identify when pupils need extra support or practice, including for some pupils at the early stages of reading and for some children learning letter formation in the early years. The school should sharpen curriculum sequencing and make checks on learning more consistent.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.
