Long Clawson Church of England Primary School is a small, much-loved village school where pupils are happy, safe and enthusiastic about learning. Parents value the school’s nurturing approach, and pupils benefit from high expectations, kind relationships and a strong personal development offer. All key judgements from the February 2025 graded inspection were good: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it operates in an interim formal collaboration with Stathern Primary School, with an executive headteacher leading both schools. The curriculum is carefully mapped to meet the needs of mixed-age classes, and pupils build increasingly complex knowledge over time. Teachers have secure subject knowledge, pupils with SEND are identified quickly and supported well, and children in the early years get a strong start. Phonics is taught effectively, and pupils are enthusiastic readers. The main area for improvement is reading beyond phonics: the school has not established an agreed approach or clearly mapped the knowledge and skills pupils should develop, and when, so teachers can teach later reading more effectively. Governors are knowledgeable and make decisions with pupils’ interests in mind, while staff feel well supported and their workload and well-being are considered. Overall, this is a good school with a caring culture, strong provision across the judged areas and one clear priority for further development in reading beyond phonics.
