Shottery St Andrew’s CofE Primary School is a small, friendly church school that has moved on well from its previous inadequate judgement. Inspectors found good provision across the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years. Pupils are cheerful, polite and welcoming, behave well, and benefit from strong relationships with staff who know them as individuals. The school has high expectations, including for pupils with SEND, and attendance has improved markedly through robust monitoring and close work with families. The curriculum is broad and ambitious and reflects the school’s locality, with reading and phonics a particular priority. Pupils become fluent readers and receive effective support to catch up where needed. Personal development is central to the school’s work, and pupils take part in a wide range of clubs, leadership roles and enriching experiences. Safeguarding arrangements are effective, staff are proud to work at the school, and governors fulfil their responsibilities well. There are two clear areas for further improvement. The approach to writing is not yet fully consistent, and some pupils’ handwriting, letter formation and writing fluency do not reflect the quality of their written work. In mathematics, the teaching of times tables is not consistent or rigorous enough, which limits pupils’ mathematical fluency for future learning. The inspection was a graded inspection, so the school did not receive an overall effectiveness grade.
