Harrogate Grammar School has a rich history of producing notable alumni, including England Youth International in Rugby Union Phil Swainston and England international rugby union footballer Martyn Wood. The institution has also been recognized for its efforts in specialist language and computing education, boasting Specialist Language Status from 2002 and being named a computing hub for the National Centre for Computing Education in 2019.

The school operates a House system with ventus, terra, ignis, and aqua representing the four classical elements, a tradition that was introduced in the 1950s. Additionally, Harrogate Grammar School is committed to student voices and involvement, as evident by the establishment of its Red Kite Youth Board in 2023.
