Brougham Primary School is a welcoming, community-focused primary school that provides exceptional pastoral care and support for pupils and families. Inspectors found high aspirations, a broad and ambitious well-sequenced curriculum, and effective provision for pupils with SEND. Pupils achieve well, behave well, and benefit from a strong personal development programme, enrichment activities and a clear priority on reading from Reception onwards. The school is well led, with effective trustees and governors, exemplary professional development and strong staff well-being. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. Teachers are well trained and present new information clearly, and pupils develop secure knowledge across subjects including mathematics. Two main areas need improvement. In early years and key stage 1, staff sometimes do not adapt teaching precisely enough to support pupils’ language development, so some pupils do not secure foundational reading and language skills as quickly as they could. Persistent absence is also high, particularly for disadvantaged pupils, meaning some pupils miss too much learning. The school’s rigorous attendance work is having a positive impact and should be sustained and developed further.
