New Earswick Primary School has undergone significant change since its last inspection, including opening provision for two-year-olds and appointing a new executive headteacher and head of school. Inspectors found safeguarding standards are met and the school is highly inclusive, with leaders identifying and meeting the needs of pupils with SEND effectively. The early years provision is a particular strength: staff interactions, language development and phonics teaching prepare children very well for Year 1. The curriculum is broad, well structured and supported by effective professional development, and pupils generally achieve well from their starting points. Personal development is also a strength, with a wide range of experiences and a strong pastoral focus. Most areas of the school are judged to be at the expected standard, while overall the school is considered to be performing strongly. Behaviour is calm and orderly, and pupils are respectful, feel safe and are proud of their school. Leaders have strengthened behaviour approaches, reduced suspensions and improved some pupils' attendance. The main area requiring attention is attendance. Some pupils, particularly those with SEND, have attendance that is too low and persistent absence is high compared with national figures. Leaders have taken effective action and are working with families, but the impact is not yet consistently seen. Leaders also need to continue improving spelling and handwriting so that pupils write accurately across all subjects, and to embed recent changes to reading so that more pupils achieve consistently positive outcomes in phonics and at the end of Year 6.
