Lancaster School is a special school for pupils with physical disabilities, severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, and many with autism. It is part of SEN Trust Southend and is expanding to include key stage 3 pupils in September 2026. Inspectors found safeguarding standards are met. The school has a positive and substantial impact on pupils' lives: pupils receive meticulous care, benefit from a strong focus on communication, build warm and trusting relationships with staff, and are well supported to manage their behaviour. Attendance and personal development and wellbeing are particular strengths, with pupils learning independence, community participation and preparation for adulthood. Other areas of the school are solid. Pupils make appropriate progress according to their special educational needs and/or disabilities, and the curriculum is adapted well, with communication and language at its core. The school is an inclusive community, transitions into and out of the setting are managed successfully, and post-16 students are well prepared for further education, training or employment. Leaders are navigating a period of change and expansion strategically while protecting staff workload and wellbeing. Staff feel valued and supported, and governance has an informed understanding of the school's provision. The main areas to develop relate to assessment and evaluation. The new assessment system is helping staff identify gaps in pupils' knowledge and skills, but it is still developing and needs embedding so that gaps are addressed precisely. Leaders also need to scrutinise the impact of interventions more forensically and analyse and evaluate the school's work more astutely to ensure sustained improvement as provision expands. Overall, this is a school performing well with strong pastoral and behavioural foundations and clear, focused next steps.

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
