Pathways School is a small independent specialist school for pupils with moderate and severe learning difficulties, including autism. All 15 pupils on roll have an EHC plan, and the school is preparing to reach its capacity of 18 in September 2026. Inspectors found a purposeful, nurturing and calm setting where pupils settle quickly, attend regularly and are well supported to manage their emotions and behaviour. The curriculum combines academic learning with therapeutic and behaviour support, is carefully sequenced and personalised, and helps pupils make substantial progress in communication, social and emotional development, literacy and numeracy. Preparation for adulthood is a clear strength. Pupils benefit from practical life-skills learning, community-based activities and work experience, and post-16 students follow a personalised programme with accredited qualifications and real-life placements. Safeguarding standards are met and all independent school standards are met. Staff know pupils well, work closely with therapists and families, and use individual targets broken into small steps. The main area for development is leadership and oversight as the school grows. Inspectors found that monitoring and oversight by leaders and proprietors have not always been as thorough as they should be, and the proprietor is prioritising leadership development for full capacity. The post-16 careers programme also needs further strengthening, particularly by extending work-related and community-based learning to match the growing number of students.
