Breightmet School

Breightmet School is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs and autism, and all pupils have an education, health and care plan. This was its second progress monitoring inspection, following earlier inspections in June 2025 and February 2026 where unmet independent school standards were identified. At this June 2026 inspection, the school meets all of the independent school standards that were checked. Leaders have made marked improvements, especially in curriculum design and assessment. The curriculum is clear, progressive and better matched to pupils’ needs, and training and coaching have helped staff deliver it consistently. Assessment is now used well to adapt teaching to pupils’ prior knowledge and next steps, and pupils generally progress from their starting points. Safeguarding arrangements are robust, with regular training, clear reporting procedures and diligent follow-up by leaders. The proprietor’s weekly performance reviews also provide effective oversight of compliance and improvement priorities. The school has addressed the weaknesses identified at previous inspections and is now consistently meeting the standards in leadership and management, quality of education, and welfare, health and safety. Although there continue to be changes in teaching and teaching assistant staff, the report identifies no remaining areas of non-compliance or significant concern.
